A model text is a standard example from some genre – sermons, letters, rhetorical exercises, etc. – intended as a guide for the preacher, speaker or writer. Some collections of model texts are found in abundant manuscript versions. The considerable editorial problems have discouraged scholars to study model text collections despite their acknowledged cultural importance. It is essential to work out pragmatic editorial methods to feed this material into current scholarly debates and views on late medieval society.
